lights out, all out

I’ve not experienced many full-on blackouts in my life, so they are still very much a novelty to me, as opposed a hassle or chore.

On Friday night at about 8:30pm, we lost all power on the farm. No lights, no power to the boiler for heat or hot water, no kettle, no power to fridge and freezer – all of which sounds very obvious as I write it here, but it’s amazing how many of the things we use rely completely on a constant source of that incredible thing that is electricity.

When I spent time in Zambia back in 2007, I marvelled at the way the inhabitants of the compounds managed to lead their daily lives without access to running water or electricity, living in tiny mud huts packed closely together without any obvious evidence of waste or unsanitary conditions. We are lucky to be in a position to rely on the luxuries that we have, and our small power cut reminded me of those people I met and how they made the most of the resources that they had available to them.

So, we boiled water on top of the fire for coffee and huddled round it for warmth, wrote shopping lists by candlelight and revelled in the silence. After 40mins or so, I got my camera out to have a go at taking some images in the dark. It’s amazing how you manage to find sources of light even in what you think is total darkness. But even that was a short-lived activity – the battery soon ran down and with no electricity to charge it I resorted back to sitting in the silence, with Parker and Blue snuggling beside me. Family time in the truest sense of the word.

I was almost disappointed when the house gave a rumble and came back to life…
